Nepal A look at this Himalayan country’s journey through the eyes of the author. The eBook is an attempt to make sense of author's life to himself. The book has been divided into four chapters. The first chapter, thirty two years of life has depicted the growth of an author along with the growth of his nation. The important events that have taken place since 1977 in Nepal have been reported in the first chapter. The second chapter, imprisoned consciousness captures the recent events in Nepal and the analysis has been presented on how the Nepali consciousness captured due to these events. This chapter describes the Maoists rise in power and abuse of the same. The third chapter, New Ideas New Context has focused on the new idea that has proliferated in the field of politics, society, economy, religion, science at the international context. The fourth chapter, Moment of Choice, looks to Nepal’s future.

This eBook is a story of human beings. How they are involved in the creation and destruction of their own society and nation. For this, Nepal has been taken as a case study. At age thirty two, the author relates his life with the life of his nation. How both of them have grown? The author has viewed the political development of Nepal through the lens of his father, who had been involved in the Nepalese political processes for the past thirty years. It explains the author’s perceptions about his country, society and people. The author has presented himself as a reporter and the book looks more like a memoir. As an inquisitive member of the nation, the author has only raised certain questions and has tried to answer them.

Foreword by Gagan Thapa, Constituent Assembly Member, Nepali Congress, Kathmandu, Nepal

UNFINISHED JOURNEY Story of a Nation eBook SUMIT SAMEER

I chose to pick this book in preparation for my trip to Nepal for the 12th Gathering of the 13 Indigenous Grandmothers this coming November 2012. My knowledge of Nepal, up to this point, was fairly limited to what I had garnered on National Geographic and Travel Channel and I wanted more in depth information on the politics of the nation. I had been reading the Kathmandu newspapers and had been reading much on the influx of Maoist violence and wondered what was going on.

The author laid out a beautifully crafted nation's autobiography as well as his own. It was very well organized, thoughtfully written and helped me to understand why Nepal's government and political situation is so unstable. From the mid 1950s and the end of the Monarchy to the quasi-democracy that followed, to the attempts to create a constitution that have failed repeatedly because not all parties have been included, and now the Maoist regime largely trying to take over the government, similarly to how they took over Tibet. The author offers a poignant view of what the last few decades of politics have led to in his country, how looking to the election of President Obama in 2008 helped him view potentials in his own country, and how there is a desperation to change the status quo. The author also includes some helpful warnings to tourists, though the book is not geared towards them, in that single American woman in particular should not travel alone due to risk of kidnapping, rape, and/or murder.

After reading this, I feel much more prepared for my trip to Nepal and for the 12th Gathering of the 13 Indigenous Grandmothers. I will be more informed in discussing the issues facing the Nepali people, understanding the political climate, issues of violence, and lack of safety/security.

One thing of note, due to the e-publishing, some of the English in the text was poorly edited, but given that it was written by someone for whom English is not their primary language, the flow of the words, cadence and rhythm of prose was quite valuable. This book simply needed a stronger editor to catch some of the grammatical hiccups noticed by native English speakers.

This is also a book of political history. But the author makes it such an afterthought. Sameer meanders through it all fortifying this scattered historical text & some interesting stories with his own reflections that categorically failed to absorb or provoke me. To be fair, there is no pretense that this book was ever meant to be anything else, as I could glean from the introduction section, but in quoting from the wise & the famous & in constantly wandering away in his muses, there just isn't enough stimulation.

Do not buy.
